The ashigaru evolved from peasant levies into disciplined professional soldiers during the Sengoku period. Fighting alongside elite samurai, they became the backbone of Japanese armies and served every major daimyo during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

Armed with the traditional yari spear or the iconic yumi bow, light ashigaru provided flexible battlefield support, guarded flanks, reinforced spear walls and delivered accurate missile fire before the decisive samurai assault.
