Mounted samurai represented the military elite of feudal Japan. During the Sengoku period, cavalry was used for rapid manoeuvres, battlefield reconnaissance and decisive charges against enemy formations. Under Oda Nobunaga, mounted warriors worked alongside disciplined ashigaru and teppo units to create one of the most effective military forces of sixteenth-century Japan.
