A ronin was a samurai who no longer served a daimyo, either because his lord had died, been defeated or stripped of his lands. During the Sengoku period, thousands of ronin travelled across Japan offering their skills as mercenaries, instructors, guards or adventurers.

Although many lived difficult lives, others gained legendary reputations for their swordsmanship and independence. Their stories became an enduring symbol of Japanese culture, inspiring countless historical accounts, novels, films and tabletop adventures set in feudal Japan.
