During World War II, the Red Army of the Soviet Union formed specialized Assault Engineer-Sapper Brigades (Russian: Штурмовая инженерно-сапёрная бригада, abbreviated as ШИСБР). These units were created in 1943 to conduct direct assaults on heavily fortified enemy positions and to lead the capture of key cities during major offensives.
They were trained for urban combat and tasked with breaching complex German defensive systems, especially in strongholds and city battles. The brigades typically included multiple battalions of assault engineers, a motorized reconnaissance company, and various support elements.
Soldiers in these units were often equipped with the SN-42 steel breastplate, designed to protect against shrapnel and small-arms fire during close-quarter assaults. These assault engineers were instrumental in operations like the Battle of Königsberg in 1945, where their skills in clearing mines, demolishing obstacles, and storming bunkers paved the way for rapid Soviet advances.
