⚔️ Historical Context

The Byzantine army
was one of the most sophisticated military forces of the medieval world.
Light infantry armed with javelins, known as psiloi or akontistai, played a vital role in screening, harassing,
and weakening the enemy before the main formations engaged.
These levies often came from provincial militias or allied territories and were crucial for the flexible tactics that defined Byzantine warfare.
