🛡️ Historical Context

The Normans
emerged as a dominant military power during the 10th and 11th centuries, known for their cavalry and disciplined infantry.
However, like many armies of the period, they relied heavily on levies — common soldiers and local recruits —
who fought with simple weapons such as javelins or short spears.
These troops were essential for scouting, harassing the enemy, and supporting heavier Norman formations.
